Virtual classroom technology enables learning and development teams to reach all audiences, at any time of the day, with just a simple internet connection, but creating engaging programs for this type of technology is an immense challenge. It requires both technical knowledge and the ability to apply sound instructional design techniques so that the trainer and producer are enabled to deliver online learning events that are filled with interactive participants, not passive attendees.

This certificate is an immersive skill-building experience of engaging online training with examples, practice and coaching designed to empower instructional designers to create virtual instructor-led training experiences with confidence! You enter a complete live online training world, participate in discussions, practice learning online, explore your virtual classroom platform, create training materials ready for immediate use and discover how your organization can begin to make the necessary shifts which support a virtual learning culture. You will walk away with the skills needed to become a savvy online virtual designer!

Application Assignments:
There will be a required 1-hour assignment following sessions one and two, and an optional practice independent assignment following session three.

Technical Needs/Prerequisites:
This course requires use of the Zoom application as a participant on a laptop or computer. Visit the ZOOM website to download the most current version. Follow this link.

***Participation via mobile device such as an iPhone or iPad or via a Web interface is NOT advised.

You must know or learn how to do the following things in Zoom prior to the start of the course (please practice in advance using the instructional links provided below.)

• Get on audio by phone or via computer.
• The location of the mute and unmute function.
• How to Chat online.
• For the in class practice time, how to Share your screen to show your work and collaborate in breakouts. 

You will be asked to complete independent application assignments using this access or using your own live online training platform.

Although this course is taught using the Zoom platform; participants can practice their course skills on their in-house/preferred platform (e.g. WebEx, Adobe Connect, Teams, Zoom, etc.)

Course Objectives

In this certificate, you will learn to:

• Identify the online meeting technology features used to create engaging online training like chat, whiteboard, polling and breakouts
• Prepare virtual instructor led materials following current design approaches.
• Select appropriate virtual instructional strategies and activities that engage online learners.
• Develop engaging learning activities that prepare participants and ensure learning transfer in an online event.
• Design live online activities, following the principles taught and practiced in the live + online learning sessions.

Course Materials

Before the certificate, you may download your participant manual containing job aids, examples, platform checklists, and processes for you to use as you prepare, design, and support your live online courses. For example:

• You’ll have several checklists to help you navigate the various live online platforms on the market today: Zoom, WebEx, Adobe Connect, Teams, and a universal checklist that can be used for any virtual classroom platform.
• You’ll have the Virtual Designer’s Competency Model detailing the specific skills necessary to be confident designing engaging live online training.
• You’ll get a Virtual Activity Design Process job aid providing a step by step guide for developing and converting activities and engagement in the live online environment.
• Using example live online templates and activities, you’ll create your own materials and processes to successfully deliver your virtual training strategy.

Kassy is a speaker, instructional designer, classroom facilitator, and author who specializes in technology, leadership, and learning. She is passionate about helping organizations, learning teams, and training professionals successfully move to the virtual environment. Kassy is the co-author of Interact and Engage! 50+ Activities for Virtual Training, Meetings, and Webinars and is currently writing her second book on the topic of Virtual Classroom Productions Strategies.

Course Equipment

IMPORTANT - You'll participate in online and collaborative activities in many ways, each designed to provide a unique means to interact and learn from experts and colleagues. All course delivery software operates at Internet connection speeds of 56.6 kbps or better, on PC, Mac and Unix platforms. Programs will use teleconferencing or VoIP (voice over Internet Protocol.) The login instructions emailed to you approximately one week prior to the start of the course will outline platform use as well as any headset requirements or suggestions. Each registrant must provide their own laptop or desktop computer and other equipment (such as a headset, if noted in your login instructions) in order to fully and successfully participate in the course. Please test your login information a minimum of 48 hours in advance on your course start date on the computer you will be using for the course.
