Learn the basics of the 3D world of Second Life. Learn how to navigate, communicate with others and to create effective online instruction within the world. This certificate program provides insights into how the popular 3D world, Second Life, can be used to encourage collaboration, create engaging instruction and provide meaningful educational experiences. The goal is to provide instructional designers with an understanding of the instructional possibilities and limitations of Second Life.

Program Details
You are required to already have established an Avatar in Second Life and to have worked through orientation island.

This course is comprised of four (4) live online sessions. In addition, there will be approximately 15 minutes of homework prior to each session.



Session One: Introduction to This Strange New World

  • Basics of navigating through Second Life

Session Two: Value of 3D Worlds for Training

  • Seven Sensibilities of a Three-Dimensional World

Session Three: Educational Implications

  • Exploring Educational Implications

  • Define the difference among 3D learning environments such as simulations, metaverses and Massively Multilearning Online Learning Environments (MMOLEs)
  • Become immersed into the Second Life Environment through activities and exercises.
  • Explore methods of designing, developing and delivering training program within a 3D environment.
  • Design an environment to encourage in-world collaboration and informal learning.
  • Identify seven learning “surrounds” that are appropriate instructional design techniques for 3D worlds.
  • Navigate within the 3D environment.
  • Create classrooms and other learning spaces within the 3D world.
  • Identify the educational and training implications of Second Life.
  • Determine the advantages and disadvantageous of using 3D learning space.
  • Identify when 3D environments are not appropriate for learning.
  • Classify the role of an instructor within a 3D learning environment.
  • Establish rules and parameters for group exercises within a 3D surround.
  • Determine the best locations within Second Life for conducting training and learning events.
  • Build learning environments within Second Life.
  • Compare and contrast 2D and 3D synchronous learning environments.
      

Basic knowledge of Second Life is helpful and appropriate technical requirements (see below) are mandatory.
  

To participate in this workshop, participants will need to have the following for a PC:

  • Connection: High Speed Internet Connection (Cable or DSL)
  • Operating System: Windows XP (Service Pack 2) or Windows 2000 (Service Pack 4). Does not currently support Windows Vista.
  • Computer Processor: 800MHz Pentium III or better
  • Memory:256MB or better
  • Video/Graphics Card: NVIDIA GeForce 2, GeForce 4mx, or better or ATI Radeon 8500, 9250 or better
  • Sound Card: VOIP enabled for discussions within Second Life and Adobe Connect environments.

Your computer MUST meet at least the minimum technical requirements shown above in order to participate in this certificate program.


Anyone who is currently designing instruction and looking to explore the possibility of using a 3D world to expand their toolkit. Anyone who is considering the training implications of Second Life. The class will spend a large amount of time within Second Life and will require the learner to navigate within the world.
